Once you have filled out an application for one of our “Buddies for Sight” we will contact you to let you know we have received your application. When a dog becomes available, we will contact the family that most suits the needs and personality of that particular dog. This may not always be the applicant that has been on the waiting list for the longest period of time. Each dog and each family have different needs and we try our best to match them appropriately. There is no way to predict when an appropriate dog for you may become available. Filling out an application does not guarantee that we will have a dog for you.
When we do contact you about adopting a GDTX Buddy, we will inform you of the dog’s background, medical history, and the reason it is being released from the training program. If the dog is a retiring Guide Dog we will release the dog’s background and medical history. This information will help you with your decision-making process. In addition, all dogs released from our program will have been neutered or spayed.
The adoption fee is waived for all our “Buddies for Sight”. We only ask for a $250 equipment fee to cover the cost of all the equipment given on placement.
Ownership of the dog will be granted after completion of the course of training. Once you have adopted a GDTX Buddy, you have certain responsibilities–in addition to caring for and loving your Buddy. Your dog must be examined at least once a year by an approved veterinary surgeon, and a completed certificate of health must be forwarded to GDTX at the address below. If at any time you cannot care for your GDTX Buddy or if we determine that the dog is not being appropriately cared for, the dog must be returned only to GDTX.
The staff at GDTX will make follow-up visits to your home around 3 and 12 months after placement to ensure the health and well-being of your dog.
